On Coloring of Sparse Graphs

چکیده
Graph coloring has numerous applications and is a wellknown NP-complete problem. The goal of this paper is to survey recent results of the authors on coloring and improper coloring of sparse graphs and to point out some polynomial-time algorithms for coloring (not necessarily optimal) of graphs with bounded maximum average degree. A GRASP for Coloring Sparse Graphs
We first present a literature review of heuristics and metaheuristics developed for the problem of coloring graphs. We then present a Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP) for coloring sparse graphs. The procedure is tested on graphs of known chromatic number, as well as random graphs with edge probability 0.1 having from 50 to 500 vertices. Empirical results indicate that the pro...
متن کاملDistributed coloring in sparse graphs with fewer colors
This paper is concerned with efficiently coloring sparse graphs in the distributed setting with as few colors as possible. According to the celebrated Four Color Theorem, planar graphs can be colored with at most 4 colors, and the proof gives a (sequential) quadratic algorithm finding such a coloring. A natural problem is to improve this complexity in the distributed setting. Using the fact tha...
متن کاملGraphs with coloring redundant edges
A graph edge is d-coloring redundant if the removal of the edge does not change the set of dcolorings of the graph. Graphs that are too sparse or too dense do not have coloring redundant edges. Tight upper and lower bounds on the number of edges in a graph in order for the graph to have a coloring redundant edge are proven. Two constructions link the class of graphs with a coloring redundant ed...
متن کامل-λ coloring of graphs and Conjecture Δ ^ 2
For a given graph G, the square of G, denoted by G2, is a graph with the vertex set V(G) such that two vertices are adjacent if and only if the distance of these vertices in G is at most two. A graph G is called squared if there exists some graph H such that G= H2. A function f:V(G) {0,1,2…, k} is called a coloring of G if for every pair of vertices x,yV(G) with d(x,y)=1 we have |f(x)-f(y)|2 an...
متن کاملWeighted Coloring on P4-sparse Graphs
Given an undirected graph G = (V, E) and a weight function w : V → R, a vertex coloring of G is a partition of V into independent sets, or color classes. The weight of a vertex coloring of G is defined as the sum of the weights of its color classes, where the weight of a color class is the weight of a heaviest vertex belonging to it. In the W C problem, we want to determine the mi...
